Performing Arts

We seek to enable students to have a well-rounded academic experience at Loyola Blakefield. Through empirical learning techniques and a discipline-based curriculum, a student experiences the arts as a form of personal expression as shaped by cultural, social and spiritual influences.

Choral Arts...
We offer several chorus ensembles at various grade levels as well as the "J Notes" - Loyola Blakefield’s select “a cappella” ensemble. The J Notes perform at a variety of events throughout the year.

On the Stage...
The Loyola Blakefield Players present three productions each year for the school community: One serious play, one comedy, and a musical are presented. Students audition for each play or musical and then rehearse after school for a six to eight week period before performing on two consecutive weekends for the general public. The Stage Crew builds the scenery for each production and students on crew also serve as the technicians for sound, lights and backstage for each show.

The Loyola Blakefield Instrumental Music Program

The Loyola Blakefield Instrumental Music program includes four award winning high school ensembles and an award winning middle school ensemble.  These ensembles are the High School Concert Band, the Jazz Ensemble “big band”, two jazz combos which create and perform their own original arrangements and the Middle School Concert Band.

Each of these ensembles usually win first or second place in their divisions at festivals, consistently receive the top ratings of  “excellent” or “superior” on a national scale by noted adjudicators at festivals and competitions, and perform numerous concerts in the Baltimore/Washington area each school year. Each ensemble is a credit course that meets during the school day like any other class although the Jazz Ensemble “big band” meets before school twice a week.  Many or most ensemble members are also in a variety of clubs and sports’ teams since we feel that it is important that students be able to participate in both music and sports.

Once they have graduated, many members of the instrumental music program major or minor in music in colleges, universities and conservatories.  Many of these students have also received significant college and university music scholarships.  Other members of the Loyola Blakefield instrumental music program who subsequently major in non-music fields in college-- such as International Relations, Aerospace, etc.—have also received significant college and university music scholarships for performing in one of the college or university music ensembles.

Loyola Blakefield periodically brings top musicians to our campus to provide workshops for the ensemble members and/or perform as guest artists along with the ensembles at concerts.  These guest artists include the former baritone saxophone, flute, composer, and musical director for jazz legend Maynard Ferguson; the former trumpet player for jazz great Woody Herman and Michael Feinstein; and (3) the former drummer for Frank Sinatra.  When the Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos participated in a music festival in New York City, Loyola Blakefield arranged for each ensemble to have a personalized ninety minute clinic with top musicians and conductors at the Lincoln Center.  The Concert Band received a workshop with the conductor of the New York City Opera Company Orchestra, Hartford Symphony Orchestra, and former associate conductor for the “on broadway” production of Cats; and the rhythm sections of the jazz ensembles received a workshop by a tympanist with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta and drummer for Gloria Estafan.

In addition to the music credit courses, Loyola Blakefield also offers a private music lessons’ program on campus after 3:00 p.m. so that any interested Loyola Blakefield students-- and students in grades 4 through 12 from other schools as well-- can take private lessons from an outstanding specialist on their particular instrument.

The nearly 100% retention rate of students in our ensembles is only one of many illustrations of its success!
