Frequently Asked Questions

When do classes start? The 2016-2017 academic calendar is still being finalized. Please check back in March for more information.

How will the school communicate with families? Email is a primary tool for communication with our families. However, you may also receive some material via USPS, especially over the summer when we send materials in advance of the beginning of a new academic year. What about school supplies? Check back with us in June for an updated 2016-2017 school supply list.

What is the school dress code? Students are required to dress according to standards determined by the school. In all cases, student dress should be characterized by neatness and cleanliness. Detailed dress code requirements for the 2015-16 school year can be found here. Loyola Blakefield reserves the right to regulate hairstyles and color, facial hair, clothing accessories, and jewelry. Upper School
Orientation takes place before the new school year begins. For incoming 9th grade students, orientation takes place over the course of four days and students perform service work together, take part in team-building exercises and become acclimated to on campus resources. There is also a Freshman Parent Orientation meeting and a Middle School Orientation meeting. Check back for updates on when these meetings will take place.

Middle School
Middle School orientation events likewise take place the week prior to the start of the school year. Parents of all Middle School Students will be invited to a Roadmap Meeting.


The price of textbooks can vary, but the average cost is $275. This includes new and used books. However, books purchased at Loyola may be returned for a credit. One thing that can affect the cost of textbooks is A.P. courses, where they can be more expensive and often must be purchased new. Check back in June for more information on textbooks.

Tuition Refund Plan

An optional Tuition Refund Plan via a third party provider is available to all Loyola families. Please reference this letter and registration form for more details. Also, you may reference this brochure.

Murray Learning Services

Murray Learning Services is intended to help students understand their learning differences, utilizing their strengths to compensate for weaknesses. Individual educational testing is used to determine the most appropriate study techniques and strategies while continually emphasizing study skills and student self-advocacy - prerequisite skills essential for success at the university level. Specialists lead students to focus on the process of learning, time management, and executive function skills. Click here to learn more.

Bus Transportation Service

Loyola contracts with private bus companies to provide service from Carroll, Harford, and Howard Counties. For details and to register for bus transportation, click here.

Summer Reading

Information about Summer Reading will be available in June. 

Math Curriculum Summer Work

All students engage in online summer math work to enhance skills and ease transition to the next course level. Requirements vary depending on your son’s course placement and must be completed prior to the start of the school year.

After Care Service (Middle School Only)

We offer an After Care Program for our Middle School students. All families are required to register for the program and select one of five different levels of service. Please complete the online form by August 1, 2016. You can learn more here.

Student Dining

Our students are treated to real food, cooked from scratch. SAGE`s seasonal menus are custom designed for us, reflecting the students` preferences as well as the fresh products available in the market.
