Loyola Blakefield fields cross country teams at the Varsity, JV and Middle School levels. Varsity and JV run in the MIAA 'A' Conference at a distance of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) each race, while the middle school program runs in a league of private middle schools on courses that are 1.5 miles long.

Formed in 1973 by Brother Paul Cawthorne, S. J., the varsity program is currently in its 42nd season. Head Coach Jose Albornoz is now in his 31st year with the program. In his time at Loyola, Coach Albornoz’s teams have won 14 MSA/MIAA Championships to bring the program's total championships to 15 since its inception. Loyola has won numerous JV championships and hosted the JV championship in 2011 as well. In the fall of 2014, Loyola’s varsity team won its sixth straight MIAA championship. Coach Albornoz was named the Baltimore Sun Metro Coach of the Year (1989), and Baltimore County Coach of the Year (1997, 2003 and 2005) in previous seasons.

Also on staff this season, now in his 30th year, is Mr. Chris Cucuzzella. Coach Cucuzzella will run the JV program again this fall. The Middle School program is coached by Ms. Laura Reid and her assistant, Mrs. Sally Waller.

This fall, the program returns a strong contingent of experienced runners. Seniors Frankie Legambi and Kevin Wegner will attempt to become the first athletes in league history to run on four consecutive MIAA championship teams. Along with returning senior Kenny Rowe and junior Max Barbour, Loyola is again the favorite to win this year's title.

The entire program, from middle school through varsity, has about 80 athletes. Cross Country at Loyola Blakefield is a no-cut sport, which rewards hard work by allowing athletes who have run in the program to run varsity by their senior year. All students are encouraged to consider the running programs at Loyola. In addition to cross country, Loyola offers opportunities in Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field. Students may try out for the team after being cut from other sports. The cross country team welcomes those athletes at any time in the week following final cuts.
